Tests And Referrals

Test Results

Your primary care provider (PCP) may need additional information for your care. You may be referred for:

  • blood work & other tests at a laboratory
  • X-rays or imaging services
  • tests or follow-up at an outside provider

Before you have any outside service, you should make sure that it is covered by your insurance. If they do not cover the service we will work with you to identify payment options. The results of the tests will be sent to your PCP here at TCHC.

TCHC will send you a letter or phone you about the test results. When we write or phone we will let you know if you need to schedule a follow-up appointment with your PCP.

If we have not given you the test results after 2 weeks, please call your PCP at 510.770.8040

Referrals to Special Providers

Your PCP may refer you to a specialty provider. TCHC's Referrals Department can assist you by requesting for your specialty appointments and sending you a reminder when the appointment has been made. You are responsible for payment to the specialist.

If you have insurance, your insurance may require you to get prior approval before they will pay for the specialist. Prior approval will take one to two weeks. There may also be a waiting period before the insurance will cover a pre-existing condition. Waiting periods vary depending on the insurance company. TCHC referral staff can contact your insurance company for you and help you with prior approvals.

If you make an appointment to a specialist on your own, without a written order from your PCP, the service may not be covered by your insurance. You are responsible for payment to the specialist office for any charges.
